The SMLBA has two objectives. They are protecting the rights of the boating public
and actively promoting boating safety on Smith Mountain Lake. We have no administrative
costs other than communications with our members through newsletters and correspondence.
Our effort to protect the rights of boaters has no cost to the organization by virtue of
being pursued personally by the officers and directors of the association. The vast majority
of our funds go towards boating education to the benefit of our community.
We currently have seven members certified by the state as boating safety instructors.
They partner with the Coast Guard Auxillary and the
Power Squadron to conduct all the boating safety classes in our area under the guidance
of the Department of Game and Inland
Fisheries.
In past years we sponsored Boating Safety Public Service Announcements on local TV. We
will continue to do this as they become available. This year we have arranged to sponsor
and conduct our own class schedule at the PAB facility located at Hales Ford Bridge. We
plan monthly classes at the same time each month in the most convenient location on the
lake. We also are committed to increasing the frequency of classes if demand is sufficient.
To accomplish this we are buying furniture and our own set of training materials to insure
we can meet the training demand. We will also be sponsoring a boating safety tip of the
month in the Smith Mountain Eagle during the season.
The 40% reduction in the accident rate for the last two years at Smith Mountain Lake is no
coincidence. We will be actively working to see that this trend continues. Your support
for our effort would be greatly appreciated.
